History
The building that houses Classic Century Square was built by R.P. Tinnin Sr. in 1956. It was initially occupied by White’s Department Store. At that time the Whites Store was one of the largest retail buildings, at 56,000 sq. ft., in New Mexico. Whites sold a large variety of merchandise from sporting goods to furniture, appliances, tires, auto repair services, etc. When it opened in 1956, across the street from the new JC Penny store, it was certainly the talk of the town and provided a wonderful retail experience for all of Albuquerque.
This unique three story, all glass fronted brick building and it’s expansive atrium and retro staircase has been a symbol of the 50’s and 60’s architectural style and is still a draw to many that identify with that era. Even today’s youth tend to admire the “cool” building built decades before they were born. The building has become a real landmark in Albuquerque and will continue to be for generations to come.
